About the Book

What to Expect

Fearless Feedback is going to change your relationship with feedback.

You are going to finish this book better equipped to broach, address, and navigate feedback conversations. You are going to have a new sense of confidence, feel more calm, be less anxious, and find yourself a more capable manager.

By extension, you will begin to see stronger team performance, greater career development for your people, and elevated employee engagement.

Most managers aren’t taught how to have great feedback conversations.

Until now.

Fearless Feedback is designed to be highly practical, relatable, and tactical.

This is not a book on why feedback is important. You already know it is. This is a book focused on the how: how to have meaningful feedback conversations while preserving your relationships.

Who This Book Is For

I wrote this book for the manager who wants to share feedback and is committed to doing it well.

This is for the manager who puts off feedback conversations out of fear for how the other person will react or the manager who feels awkward and unsure about how to bring up a feedback conversation.

From first-time manager to seasoned manager, my work and experience has shown the worries, assumptions, and self-doubt that persist in the area of difficult conversations does not discriminate based on title and level.

This is the right book for you if any of these thoughts have crossed your mind:

  • Nothing’s going to change, so why bother?

  • If I give this feedback, it’ll ruin our relationship.

  • How the heck am I supposed to give that feedback?

What’s Inside

Part 1 is about understanding the Fearless Feedback Framework and the supporting frameworks that can enable your success.

You will see how the parts of the framework build upon one another.

We begin by clarifying the purpose of the conversation needing to be had. You will learn how to identify whether it’s a conversation about an Instance, a Pattern, or Role Fit.

With feedback type identified, you’ll move into the Fearless Feedback Framework and the three ingredients you need for a thoughtful and rewarding feedback conversation: Mindset, Relationship, and Delivery.

Throughout the book, you will see how we go back to each of these three ingredients in every situation.

Within Delivery, you will learn the Headline, Observation, Ask (HOA) framework for feedback delivery.

This framework ensures you capture their interest and minimize reactions, to ultimately share an observation that will be actionable for their growth and development.

Next, you will gain tools and one last framework for handling reactions to feedback. Whether your message is met with silence, excuses, anger, or defensiveness, you will learn how to embrace the reaction, channel the energy, and then redirect it to the task at hand, which can impact future performance and behavior.

For a quick visual preview, this will be your framework for navigating reactions:

As the last component for Part 1, you have two chapters dedicated to bringing these frameworks to life by way of modeling language for real feedback situations. You’ll see they’re broken out first by the purpose of the feedback (Instance, Pattern, or Role Fit). Then we consciously think about our Mindset and Relationship, and finally we get tactical with using Headline, Observation, Ask (HOA) for your Delivery.

Part 2 is all about the additional nuances and challenges within these conversations.

  • Knowing what to do and say after you’ve had the conversation

  • Determining what to do about second hand feedback

  • Learning how to be a human and hold folks accountable when their personal life begins to impact their performance

  • Giving feedback to your manager and peers

  • Understanding how to complement your efforts with AI, and more!

This book is everything I wish I’d known earlier in my management journey.
